Finding a Breeder

Responsible Breeders

One of the most important aspects of finding a dog is to seek out a responsible breeder.

Responsible Breeders Are…

Not just a point of sale contact, but a partner for the rest of your dogs life. They set up the dogs future by doing many things differently than a backyard breeder would:

PERFORM HEALTH TESTING

Health teting can include many things, from hip displaysia to genetic diseases. Most ehtical breeders follow the breed-specific recommendations for health testing by the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC).

KNOW THE PEDIGREE

A dog’s pedigree and history will set up a dog for future success. Ethical breeders track and study that history, working to add strong lines to their pedigree.

MAINTAIN BREED STANDARDS

Breed standards help ensure the ideal characteristics, temperment, appearence, and structure of the dog, ensuring a strong future and consistent nature amongst the breed.

PARTNER FOR LIFE

An ethical breeder does not treat a dog like a point of sale transaction, but rather, as a family member they are sending away; the breeder should always have your interests in mind and be a future resource for you.
